The Hunger Games Capitol Culture Features Effie Trinket wearing McQueen

Lionsgate released a Tumblr site that features the fashions that will be worn in The Hunger Games movie (March 23.) Issue one of Capitol Couture was released today. The premiere issue featured Effie Trinket (played by Elizabeth Banks) wearing a pair of gold Alexander McQueen booties. And this is only the start of the Capitol fashion to be seen! Yet ANOTHER fashion design competition is coming to Lifetime. Hosted by Alexa Chung, 24 Hour Runway consists of 4 designers competing for a $10,000 cash prize courtesy of Cover Girl and Herbal Essences. Each episode, the contestants will have a quick challenge where one will get eliminated and then the other three will have 24 hours to make a three piece collection. Its like Cupcake Wars but with fashion.

Judges include Cynthia Rowley, fashion editor Derek Blasberg, and publicist James LaForce.

Fabulous Fall Fashion

As the end of July approaches, I can't help but feel a slight excitement for the possibilities of fall. It doesn't help that the Nordstrom Anniversay Sale has been in full swing since the beginning of the month, selling fall merchandise pre-season at a fraction of the price.

Being as I work there I definitely had to seize the opportunity. The pride and joy of all my purchases was this Rebecca Minkoff clutch made with ostrich-embossed leather for $88.90 (originally $135).

It is a little piece of fall that I get to enjoy now.

You know my love for TOMS since my job is to sell them at Nordstrom. So you have to know how excited I was when I read about this!

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen made some cashmere, herringbone, and plaid TOMS for this fall. They are on sale now and cost between $140-$150. Yes they're way more expensive than normal TOMS, but you have to consider the fabrics (the original ones are made of canvas! Much cheaper!) Plus they have The Row's name attached to them.

I hope we get them in the store soon!

The teen obsession that is Justin Bieber went to a whole new level with the debut of his own perfume line, "Someday." I mean, normally I would just ignore the fact that yet another celebrity is making a fragrance line, but something sucked me in.

The first thing I noticed was how much the perfume bottle resembled the Marc Jacobs' perfume, "Lola."

Although Marc Jacobs isn't suing (he tweeted about the resemblance: “We don’t mind. We’re Beliebers.”) it really irritates me. What, being a teen idol isn't enough for him? He has to copy people with actual talent? I wish celebs would keep to their acting and/or singing and leave the fashion to the experts.

I have quite the fragrance collection, myself. And as a lover of fragrances I have come acquainted (no...wait....infatuated) with a few of the many Marc Jacobs parfums: Daisy and Lola to name a few.

Well meet their "sweeter and sensual" sister, Oh, Lola!

This fragrance is still topped with the ever popular flower, however is housed in a lighter pink bottle. Just like her sisters, Oh, Lola! will come in three sizes and also come in a body wash. The scent is a mixture of peony, vanilla, pear, sandalwood, magnolia, and tonka bean.

TOMS "One for One" Eyewear Collection

To say that TOMS shoes are the latest thing would be an understatement.

They are one of the most sought after footwear on the market. People live to buy TOMS.

After years of providing their basic yet functional canvas shoes, TOMS has come up with a new way to help children all over the time with his notorious "One for One" campaign. Today the founder and CEO of TOMS, Blake Mycoskie, announced the new TOMS eyewear collection.

The $135 per pair sunglass line was made in Italy and comes in three basic styles: Classic 101 (like a Wayfarer), Classic 201 (a large and round model), and Classic 303 (like an aviotor). These all come in an array of colors and sport the trademark TOMS logo.

But instead of giving a pair of sunglasses for every pair sold, the money will directly help the visual health of a person in a developing country with the help of the Seva Foundation. According to Mycoskie,

"Sight is a fundamental need. The loss of sight has a dramatic impact on a person's life -- and on his or her family and community. We're so excited to help more people in need and for TOMS to give in a whole new way."

Nail Obsession

I don't know what it is about summer, but since the temperature has been heating up I have been becoming obsessed with the hue of paint I put on my hands and toes. My sudden interest in colors must have something to do with the fact that in the colder months, I usually stick to the dark shades of black, maroon, and grey.

But I have stashed away my dark shades of nail polish and have ventured to the brighter side of the spectrum. Take a look at the polishes I am loving!

This is something that is blowing up in salons everywhere. You start off with a base coat of whatever shade you please. Then you layer a thin coat of the crackle nail polish on top (I chose Sally Hansen's Snow Blast white.) As this top layer dries, it naturally starts to crack giving you a fun polish design that everyone will love.

Brights are a given. Usually I tend to lean toward the neon pinks, however I felt as though they were played out, so I decided to try something new. Orange, bright blues, green, and yellow are a fun pop of color that can sometimes be unexpected. You will always have a taste of summer on the tips of your toes and fingers!

And finally we have metallics. Metallics are a fresh way to experiment with your manicure and pedicure. Silver pops, almost like a white polish. I also enjoy light golds and bronzes, however any metallic with a mixture of an inky blue are fun too.

TOMS One Day Without Shoes

We all know that TOMS is amazing with their One for One policy, for every pair of TOMS that is sold, one pair is donated to a child in need. However, what does it feel like not to have shoes?

Tomorrow TOMS is asking everyone to participate in their One Day Without Shoes campaign. This raises awareness on how crucial it is to wear shoes and why it's important to give to those who don't have them.

Unfortunately I work tomorrow at my job as a sales person at the shoe department at Nordstrom, so I cannot not wear shoes. However, we do sell TOMS so I will make sure to spread the word.

Brad Goreski to Get His Own Bravo Show!

I should be excited. What fashion lover wouldn't be excited for this news? I think I am still getting over the fact that Brad left Team Zoe.

But news broke today that Brad will indeed have his own show on the same network as his former boss. The show will be called It's a Brad Brad World.

Honestly. Not loving the name. But I digress.

According to Fashionista, the show will follow Brad on his journey to becoming an independent stylist. I'm sure the show will be very interesting (especially if we finally get to see Brad in his relationship with his loving boyfriend!)

I really hope it airs the same night as The Rachel Zoe Project. This way I can pretend that they are still together </3

Target to Bring Back 17 Designers

In order to celebrate their 5th year of housing well-known designers, Target will be re-releasing a collection of 34 dresses by 17 of their most popular designers for GO International.

According to Fashionista, the March cover of Vogue has leaked. And who's gracing the cover? Lady Gaga!

This is definitely a different look for Gaga. She's a little more styled and a little less...well...wild. I'm definitely more use to seeing Gaga a little more rocked out, but it is refreshing to see something so unexpected (and so normal! Pink wig and all!).

Hey everyone!

I hope you all had a great holiday! I sure did. One of my favorite things about the holidays is when you ask for (and receive) gifts that you have been wanting (and needing) for months.

Well this year, my favorite gift was just that. I asked for the Sephora Collection: Endless Color Blockbuster. And let me tell you...this gift is amazing!

I am going to get a job in fashion...even if it kills me

So I just did one of the ballsiest things I've ever done.

It's no secret that I am (pretty much) unemployed even though I graduated from college in May (something about a recession?). I originally looked for entry level fashion jobs in New York, went on numerous interviews, and wound up empty handed.

It was always an agreement between me and my boyfriend, that whoever got a job first, the other would follow (location wise). So as it turned out, this past October, my boyfriend got a job in southern New Jersey. Clearly not the fashion capital of the world.

My initial plan was to simply transfer to the Charlotte Russe closest to him, but after much consideration (primarily about my finances) it became clear that I wouldn't be able to keep up my half of the rent/bills, etc. on my minimum wage/part time retail job.

So here I am, 7 months after graduation, still living at home in Connecticut with my parents. Now, I've looked for jobs in Jersey that weren't in fashion and still had no luck. I even extended my search to Philadelphia, and yet so far I've heard nothing.

I finally decided, that it's time to take matters into my own hands. I mean, here I was searching website after website for any job that I felt I could manage. Then I thought about it. What do I want to do with my life? I want to work in fashion. And although Philly isn't a fashion capital either, it is a city and, to me, every city has a fashion district. I did some research and finally found that Urban Outfitters Inc. is located out of Philly. In addition, (for those of you who don't know this) Urban also owns Anthropologie and Free People.

I had seen job postings on websites for assistant buyer positions (which would be amazing!) along with other positions, but every time you applied you were brought to their main "career" website where you'd submit your information. After applying to roughly 10 different positions, it hit me: there is no way to stand out amongst all the other hundreds (or thousands) of applicants who are also applying through this career site.

So what did I do to stand out?

I put together three mini portfolios.

In each portfolio was my resume (duh), cover letter, and a summary about the items in the portfolio: four writing samples, examples of design work I did for my college newspaper, and a copy of the final image chosen from the photo shoot I assisted for Entertainment Weekly with Emma Stone. After assembling these packages, I sent them out (yes... via "snail mail") to the presidents of Urban Outfitters, Free People, and Anthropologie .

Why?

This way, I feel like whoever does open these packages (whether they be the presidents of the companies or not) they can have a true glimpse of what I've done, who I am, and what I'm capable of. Who knows what will come of this? If nothing does, so be it. At least I know I'm really trying everything I can to fulfill my dreams.

Seriously Cosmo??? Let's NOT be rude to retail employees

In the December issue of Cosmo, there was a section entitled "Tis The Season...To Be A Little Bitchy." In this section, Cosmo gave advice how to more or less get your way with only a little bit of attitude. Some of the advice was good, like "How to make a cheap gift look chic" or "how to score the in-demand parking spot." However, there was a section about "how to return without a receipt" which really, quite frankly, pissed me off. As you know I work in retail, which is hard enough already. But when I read their "advice" I flipped.

Their advice more or less said (not verbatim):

1. Don't say anything about not having a receipt. See if the clerk will do the return anyway.

2. If they ask for the receipt, ask if you can just get store credit.

3. If the clerk still won't comply, raise your voice and say "Well, I spend a lot of money here, but if you won't help me out, I will bring my service else where." This way, the clerk will most likely comply due to not wanting other customers to get upset by the confrontation.

I normally never write to magazines. But I couldn't help it this time. This is what I wrote:

"In this month's issue of Cosmo, in the section entitled "Tis The Season...To Be A Little Bitchy," I was shocked by your advice on how to return something to a store without a receipt. As someone who has been working in retail for almost 4 years, I was angry that you were telling customers to raise their voice in order to get what they want. The reason stores have such strict return policies is because of theft. If you do not have a receipt, how are we at the store suppose to know that it wasn't stollen? It happens all too often. We are just trying to do our jobs, and if you don't have a receipt...well..tough luck. Either try the garment on in the store, organize your receipts better, or if you get it as a gift, ask for a gift receipt. It's not fair to us who work hard in retail when a customer thinks that they deserve to get money (or even store credit) when their is no proof of the purchase. It's our job. Please don't make it any harder for us."

So please everyone, be nice to people who work in retail. It's not an easy job, and yelling at us will only make you look like a jerk.

Kelly Cutrone on Dr. Phil

I honestly would never picture these two people in the same sentence, let alone in the same room: Kelly Cutrone...and Dr. Phil.

But on November 4, Cutrone made her first appearance as a correspondent on Dr. Phil's show. The topic was about young(ish) women who "are spoiled and entitled". She let 28 year old Erica (from VH1's You're Cut Off) intern for a day at People's Revolution to teach her about a hard days work and responsibility. Not only was it hilarious hearing Cutrone criticize Erica's all pink outfit and tiara, but watching her explain the complexities of packing clothes was priceless.

She gave so honestly harsh advice and I think that, like always, she hit the nail on the head, especially considering that Dr. Phil kept raving about how much he loves her and her book, If You Have To Cry, Go Outside. I can't wait until they do the next episode. I will set my TiVo in advance!

Styling Lenka

This past week, I spent 3 days in New York, freelance assisting for Priscilla Polley. This was the second time I had assisted her, the first time being for a photo shoot for Entertainment Weekly with Emma Stone.

This time it wasn't a publication shoot. We were to style Australian singer Lenka for her next album cover and some press shots. She is best known for her song "The Show," which was featured in many commercials.

This Aussie has a great sense of personal style. She knows what she does and doesn't like, yet is adventurous to try new things. I was sent around Soho and vintage shops to find apparel for the shoot.

On Wednesday, we had the fitting. Lenka pretty much liked everything, with only a few critiques in sizes. Thursday morning, I ran out and grabbed our last minute necessities and met up with the crew at a studio in the Bronx. The studio was beautiful and enormous. Lenka used roughly 10 outfits in the 9 hour day. They did shots of her eating ice cream, creating arts and crafts, playing with balloons, posing on the roof, and so much more. It was a really fun shoot, and Lenka and her crew were loads of laughs. I even had to smoke a cigarette in order to create a "smokey effect." Ah, the things we do for art.

I am eager to see what they choose for the cover and I'm dying to hear her music. During one of the shoots (the one where I was smoking, lol) she sang for us. Her voice was incredible. The whole experience was great!

Lanvin To Do Next H&M Line!

Career: Nicole began her career in Paris as a freelance designer. In the early 1970's she moved to London to begin her long and close association with Stephen Marks. Rachel Zoe "Dies" For Fashion

Harper's Bazaar has to be one of my top favorite fashion magazines (besides their insistent obsession with "fabulous at every age"). So, I was pleased to see my favorite celebrity stylist, Rachel Zoe, in a spread in the September issue.

The article was called "I Die" and depicted the question, what if Rachel actually died from fashion?

In this five page spread, Rachel is paired with designers Brian Atwood, Mac Jacobs, Vera Wang, Francisco Costa, and Michael Kors, who are all in the process of killing. Whether it's death by shoe stabbing or electrocution by hair dryer, the girl looks chic.

I just hope we get to see some behind the scenes footage on the RZP. Until then, here's a video I found with Rachel talking about the shoot. Enjoy! xx

Mulberry's Making A Target Line!!

Um, apparently I have been living under a rock because I just found out that Mulberry is making a line for Target via Gilt Groupe, and let's just say I'm REALLY excited. They're bags are always gorgeous, and obviously I'm in no position to buy one, so this is my chance!

The line will consist of 8 pieces and will be in stores and online from October 10 through December 24. All of the pieces will be under $50.

Levi's Curve ID

It's no mystery that when it comes to denim, I have a soft spot for Levi's. Not only did they give my first fashion internship, they also are, to me, the definition of the perfect jean.

Now they made shopping for jeans even easier. Tonight is the launch party of their new jean called "Curve ID." The idea behind this new line is that "every woman should be able to go into stores and find jeans that fit them instead of having to fit into the jeans." Basically, these jeans are meant to celebrate a woman's natural curves instead of hindering them. According to their press kit,

"We traveled the globe, talking to and measuring thousands of women, to better understand their sizes, shapes, and proportions. Our research confirmed what we’ve known all along: one size does not fit all. That’s why we developed Levi’s® Curve ID — a unique, customized fit system focusing on a woman’s shape and proportions, not her size."

The new jeans come in three custom fits: Slight, Demi, and Bold Curve. These new bootie friendly jeans are now available in stores and at Levis.com.

Another Complaint About Cosmo's Cover...

Sorry to keep raining down on Cosmo lately, but I can't help but express my critique.

When I first saw this cover on the news stands, I swear I felt like I was in a time warp. The blue background paired with the orange font took me back to issues from the 90's.

Don't get me wrong, Jessica Alba looks adorable, although her outfit isn't the most modern look out there. I know that Cosmo likes to change up the color combo on their covers, as does most magazines, but this just struck me as dated. I don't know...maybe I'm just over Cosmo and it's insistent sex advice (I would like more fashion please!) in general.

With my constant 2 cents (at this point its about $20) about Cosmo, my boyfriend asked me why I even still buy them monthly. My response: I'm addicted to magazines, whether their my favorites or just classics (which you must admit, Cosmo is, at least for my generation). Besides, if I want to work for a magazine some day, I need to take in what I do and do not like in a publication. So thanks for the help, I guess, Cosmo! You are giving me plenty of ideas of what I don't like!

Give Them The Chic Shoulder

So, fall fashion is hitting the stores and I couldn't be more excited.

And what's something I am obsessing about this season? SHOULDERS. I want them high and pointed!
